Nine ways to awaken your spirit to God
Starting on a path to awaken your spirit to God begins with developing your spiritual senses so you can experience a deeper awareness of His presence.
The Kingdom of God is within your reach and accessed through faith. Faith trusts in the supernatural reality of God’s kingdom, a realm that Jesus has given us access to through His love and sacrifice.
When you awaken your spirit to God, you begin to see, sense, and perceive the invisible kingdom, gaining discernment to understand what God is doing in and around you.
The Bible tells us that spiritually asleep believers are like the spiritually dead. Spiritual sleep dulls our senses and numbs our hearts to God’s voice and concerns. However, when we allow the light of God’s revelation to enter, it brings power, life, and truth into every part of our being.
As the Apostle Paul urges in Ephesians 5:14, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Similarly, Revelation 3:2 warns, “Wake up and strengthen all that remains before it dies.” These verses call us to rise from our spiritual slumber and open ourselves to God’s life-giving presence.
Sometimes, spiritual sleepiness can result from apathy, but it can also be the effect of an oppressive spirit working against us. One of Satan’s strategies is to keep believers from awakening their spirits to God and experiencing true intimacy with Him. If you sense that a spirit of slumber is affecting you, you can confront it with prayer.
Prayer to Awaken Your Spirit and
Renounce Apathy:
“Jesus I confess and repent for the times I have allowed apathy, indifference, and complacency to take root in my life. I renounce these attitudes and ask that You cleanse my heart and renew my mind. Stir within me a passion for Your presence, a hunger for Your Word, and a willingness to step boldly into the work of Your Kingdom. I desire to be awakened to God’s love and fully alive in Christ. I thank You and declare Your word in Luke 10:19: ‘Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.’ I now take authority over slumbering and oppressive spirits and command them to release me! I send all unclean spirits to the feet of King Jesus, and I declare the promise of Isaiah 40:31: ‘Those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.’ I release my spirit to soar in the heights with the Lord, and I seal this prayer in the precious blood of Jesus. Amen and Amen!”
Awakening Your Senses
You are a triune being—body, soul, and spirit, made in the image of God. Each part of you is beautifully designed to interact with the world around you. Your body connects to the physical realm, your soul engages with the emotional and interpersonal realm, and your spirit interacts with the unseen spiritual realm. To truly awaken your spirit to God, it is essential to understand how these three parts of you work together.
You might not realize it, but you have 15 senses! Each part of you—body, soul, and spirit—can taste, touch, hear, see, and smell. Let’s explore this deeper with an illustration of a rose.
Body
Your body is your physical structure. It engages with the natural world using your five physical senses.
For example, if I asked a group of people to smell a rose, they would engage their physical sense of smell. Some might even have physical reactions, like sneezing or itchy eyes, as their body interacts with the rose in the physical realm.
Soul
Your soul is made up of your mind, will, and emotions. It is the place of your thoughts, feelings, and desires, and it connects you to the interpersonal realm.
If I asked the same group to experience the rose through their soul senses, their reactions would vary depending on the memories tied to the scent. For one person, the rose might bring to mind memories of a wedding. For another, it might remind them l of a funeral or even their grandmother’s perfume. This shows how your soul interacts with the relational and emotional aspects of life.
Spirit
Your spirit is the deepest and most profound part of you. It’s the part that connects you directly to God. Some call it your conscience, intuition, or spiritual sensitivity. Psalm 139:13 reminds us, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.” This divine part of you was handcrafted by God to engage with Him in the spiritual realm.
When you awaken your spirit to God, you become more sensitive to His presence and to the activity of His Kingdom. Just as your physical senses engage with the natural world, your spiritual senses perceive the spiritual realm. For example, the spiritual sense of smell can reveal God’s presence or warn you of evil.
A Heavenly Encounter
I once experienced a heavenly fragrance during worship. The aroma of coconut, pineapple, and spice filled the atmosphere and stirred my spirit, drawing me deeper into worship. The fragrance would appear as if it were drifting through the air, then vanish completely, leaving no lingering trace behind. Interestingly, while some people around me could smell this heavenly scent, others could not until it was pointed out to them.
The following Sunday, I was worshiping beside an older woman when the spiritual scent appeared again. She initially couldn’t smell it, and sweetly said, “It’s okay, I’m just blessed that you can!” but when I prayed for her, she suddenly exclaimed with joy, “I do, I do! I smell it now!” This moment awakened her spirit to a deeper reality of God’s presence, leading her to worship with all her heart.
These experiences remind us how important it is to remain spiritually attentive. Often, we are so consumed by the physical and emotional realms that we miss the activity of God in the spiritual realm. To awaken your spirit to God, you can simply and intentionally ask Him to awaken your spiritual sight and heighten your spiritual senses.
Experiencing God’s Presence Through Spiritual Senses
When your spirit is awakened, you become more attuned to God’s presence and activity. For example, the spiritual sense of smell can alert you to His nearness or, conversely, warn of demonic activity. While I haven’t personally experienced it, others have reported sensing the odor of sulfur when evil forces are present.
Engaging in practices that awaken your spirit to God can lead to profound experiences of His presence. During our “soaking in God’s presence” ministry events, individuals have reported tasting strawberries, a manifestation of spiritual taste. Personally, I once experienced a subtle, delicate taste of fresh rain. As I sang praises, a heavenly mist subtly touched my tongue. Such experiences reveal the reality of God’s unseen Kingdom and His deep desire to connect with us in a profound and personal way.
I have heard three testimonies, including my own, from individuals who felt water on their skin during one of our soaking events. Soaking is a transformative practice of listening prayer, where you intentionally rest in stillness, to connect deeply with God and experience the fullness of His presence.
You can experience soaking with Christian instrumental music or guided Christian meditation. It’s crucial to choose artists with pure Biblical foundations to avoid influences from New Age or occult sources. I recommend Kimberly and Alberto Rivera for their powerful spiritual songs, Graham Cooke for devotional soaking, and my own guided Christian meditations for intimate encounters with Jesus, シ Shop Christian meditations
Many have experienced the touch of the Lord during soaking sessions, describing sensations like a warm hand upon them, only to find no one physically present. Such experiences signify God’s healing and ministering presence.
For instance, I once met a lady as she was collecting carts in front of Ralphs grocery store. I noticed she wore a back brace and asked if I could pray for her. When I laid my hand on her back, her back got hot, and it scared her. She ran away from me during my prayer! Lol. A couple minutes later she returned to say it freaked her out but she received complete healing from a painful back injury!
Hear
Hearing God’s voice through His Word is the most profound and accurate way to discern His voice. The Word of God serves as the ultimate standard, or “plumb line,” by which we measure all other spiritual experiences.

The Living Word
The following scriptures vividly highlight the supernatural power and reality of God’s Word:
•Hebrews 4:12:
“For the word of God is ALIVE and ACTIVE. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
•John 1:1-14:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the WORD WAS GOD … The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
•John 6:63:
“The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are FULL OF THE SPIRIT and life.”
These passages remind us of the living, active nature of God’s Word, inviting us to engage with it deeply and personally.
The Audible Voice of God
Hearing God’s audible voice is rare and amazing. One morning, I dreamt of walking with the Lord in His garden. I was awakened by an audible voice that called my name, “Candi,” in a gentle, fatherly voice. I opened my eyes and was alone. This encounter was confirmed the next day at a living tabernacle event, where I read a testimony in their pamphlet mirroring my experience! The creator of the living tabernacle wrote, “I had an encounter with God where I was walking in the garden with the Lord, and he spoke my name.” I started weeping as I could hardly believe what I was reading!
See
On three occasions I have been blessed to see (in the spirit) the slumbering human spirit awaken and connect to God in a deeper way. As I prayed, I spiritually saw sleepy eyes with sweeping lashes that slowly opened, looking around in wonder. This underscores the importance of praying for God to enlarge our spirits, as they can better lead us in righteousness and holiness.
This image is the closest thing I could find depicting the eyes of the human spirit, and it doesn’t compare to the purity and light I saw. Since the human spirit is without sin, it is important to pray that God would enlarge your spirit so that your spirit can better lead you in righteousness and holy living.
Spiritual Birth
Awakening occurs when Jesus arises with new life in our hearts. Upon receiving Christ, everything becomes vibrant and alive. However, it’s common to fall into spiritual apathy. In such times, a fresh encounter with God—through worship, prayer, spiritual renewal, or a fresh baptism in the Spirit—is essential to reconnect intimately with Him.
Our souls often dominate our thoughts, feelings, and desires. By praying for God to awaken and enlarge our spirits, we align more closely with His will. My prayer is for your eyes to be full of light and for your spirit to be awakened to God, enabling intimate connection with Him through your 15 senses.
As Ephesians 1: 17-19 states, I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that you may know Him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you may know the hope He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people, and His incomparably great power for us who believe.
We were created to be fully engaged and connected with God—alive, illuminated, wise, and fully awakened to Christ! As you reflect His light, your countenance can change – and glow with his radiance.
Awakening your spirit to God involves intentional practices that enhance your spiritual awareness and deepen your connection with Jesus.
Nine ways to awaken your spirit to God:
1. Rebuke demons: Actively reject death, dumb, and blind spirits that may hinder your connection with God.
2. Daily, pursue the Lord and ask Him to awaken your spirit to experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
3. Pay attention: Intentionally view life through your spiritual eyes. Ask God to help you be aware and discern His presence in everyday situations— such as through street signs, song lyrics, or even classic films like “Pinocchio.” God can communicate to you in limitless ways!
(Pinnochio is one of my favorite examples of this! Word for word – it’s God’s story! – read the original movie script here).
4. Engage with God: Pursue a wholehearted connection with each wonderful part of Him the father, the son and the Holy Spirit! Connect with Him, in spirit, soul, and body.
5. Rest, meditate and be still before the Lord, waiting patiently for him to speak. (Find Holy Spirit-led meditations here)
6. Give Him your all: Offer sacrificial worship that costs you something, such as time or personal comfort.
7. Read God’s word with spiritual insight: Approach it seeking deeper understanding and revelation.
8. Be Attentive to the Holy Spirit: Develop a keen sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s guidance and promptings in your daily life.
9. Engage in Listening Prayer: Ask connection questions to God, then patiently listen for His responses. Ask questions like, “Jesus, what do you love about me?” or “Father God, what do you want me to know?” or “Jesus, how can I show your love to someone today?”
Testing Spiritual Things
Everything that sparkles isn’t gold! Test every word that you think might be from God by asking: Does it encourage, comfort or affirm identity? Is it consistent with the character of God as revealed in scripture? Does it aline with Biblical teachings? Does it reassure that God knows your heart, concerns, and hopes? Does it express God’s love for you?

•Seeing:
•Ezekiel saw visions of God, including heavenly images, and ate a scroll.

•Tasting:
•Ezekiel described the scroll he ate as sweet as honey (Ezekiel 3:3).
•David invited us to “taste and see that the Lord is good”. (Psalm 34:8).
•Hebrews speaks of those who have tasted the heavenly gift and shared in the Holy Spirit. (Hebrews 6:4).
•Smelling:
•Paul described believers as the “aroma of Christ,” spreading the fragrance of God’s knowledge everywhere. (2 Corinthians 2:15).
•Touching:
•God assured Moses that His presence would go with him, offering comfort and reassurance. (Exodus 33:14).
•Daniel experienced the physical touch of an angel, which strengthened him during his vision (Daniel 10:10).
•Discerning:
•1 Corinthians teaches that those who have the Holy Spirit can discern spiritual things. (1 Corinthians 2:14-15).
These examples reveal how God engages with His people using their spiritual senses, but let’s not limit God to a book! Jesus did much more than what was recorded. John 21:25 says, “If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.”

Jesus I love you with all my heart
I promise to serve my God to the eternity no retreat no surrender
The LORD spoke to me 7/21/22 and said Awaken your Soul. I googled in for scripture and found scripture to support it, songs to support it and this GOD-given article to assist me in awakening my soul.
I am saved for 39 years and am recently refreshed, renewed and revived by being led by the HOLY SPIRIT. The LORD, I believe, is leading me to meditate using sanskrit, at least I think it is the LORD. I did it for a few days and I stopped because I was not sure about it.
What are your thoughts? Blessing to you and I will continue reading these articles.
Dear Emmanuel,
Thanks for reaching out.
As I’m praying for you I hear the words… “There is JESUS… and then everything else.”
As you seek the deeper things of God it is so important to guard and protect your mind and spirit.
Remember that Satan comes as an angel of light.
2 Corinthians 11:14
“And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”
Mathew 24:24
For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
If you use Scripture as your plumb line… to test everything else, Jesus will lead you to truth.
“Sanskrit is the classical language of India and Hinduism.” It’s not a Biblical model of meditation. As Christians, we need to be careful not to open ourselves up to other gods/spirits – even if it feels positive (false light)
You weren’t sure about it…because Holy Spirit was given you a warning. When it’s truly Holy Spirit there will be No doubt in you!
Again, there is JESUS and everything else.
All you need is Jesus
Hope this was helpful,
Blessings friend
